Can you learn a second language the way you learn your native language? Is Task-Based learning the answer to learning a second language? How do you conduct research to find answers to these questions? What is the best way to test the proficiency level of your students? Should your government encourage bilingual education? If these types of questions appeal to you, the international MA programme in Applied Linguistics (TEFL) may be for you. The duration of the programme is 12 months (total workload of 60 ECTS credits). It is a truly international program with about 50% Dutch students and 50% students from abroad. We have had students from Armenia, Israel, South Africa, China, Taiwan, Hungary, Greece, Germany, Britain, Rwanda and Czech Republic. The program focuses on the process of learning and using a second language. It covers various fields of study because learning and using a second language can be approached from many different angles, including cognition, psychology, social interaction, language teaching and culture. The program enables students to specialise in their language of choice, for instance Dutch as a second language, but also French, German, Spanish, Swedish or any other second or foreign language. This Master introduces students to the field of linguistics, language acquisition and language teaching theory, and enables them to apply these insights to teaching a foreign language to groups of students with different language backgrounds or to doing further research into applied linguistics and TEFL. It prepares students for academic research in the field of language learning and language use and to apply this knowledge to setting up language teaching courses and programs. However, this Master is NOT a degree in the Faculty of Education; therefore, it does not focus on curriculum development and practical applications. It is an academic degree that gives theoretical insights that help assess language teaching methods and other applied linguistic research.
